From April to June, 2020, a dozen senior filmmakers learned about film theory, film scripting, and were taught to film and edit on their phones. Originally planned as an in-person workshop to be held at the Flushing Selfhelp Latimer Gardens Senior Center, this workshop transformed to a virtual course taught on Zoom as the COVID-19 pandemic spread. The seniors in fact made the pandemic the theme of their videos, which are not only a testament to their filmmaking abilities but to their strength and willingness to share their fears and sorrows.
This program was presented by Third World Newsreel in collaboration with the Selfhelp Latimer Gardens Senior Center, was taught by filmmaker/teaching artists Yung-Jen Yang in Mandarin, and was made possible in part by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs with public funds from the NY City Council, with special thanks to Council member Peter Koo.
There is a separate video of their final screening and filmmaker Q&As.
