Sons of the Sea | Hijos de la Mar
Zonen van de Zee – LQ version
Sons of the Sea relates about a small Spanish fishing village in Galicia.
The Sea is their companion. They worship ‘Mother Sea’. All fathers and sons work in the fishing trade. Some sign up on ships earning wages in Argentina, Uruguay, Holland. Travelling their path made of waves. Others stay. Night after night, you hear the splashing of their nets. Navigating is science to them, but life is not. Unexpectedly the Oil tanker Prestige spills its oil in their Sea. The sailors, who never complain about the cold, who work for their children, encounter a disaster.
Their children’s future is severely damaged.
I found a profound relation with those men who go out fishing; whose lives depend upon the richness of the sea. How cruel it was that these fishermen were confronted with the oil tanker Prestige spilling its oil in their back yard. I saw them sad and startled. It was then that I fully understood: ‘These men are the real keepers of nature.’ Thus I wanted to tell about their unconditional love for the sea. And the Sea, the harsh and loving Mother, became a leading character. She had to speak out loud. My grandfather was a Dutch sailor. He thought me to respect and love the sea. As a Dutch artist I pay my respect to the maltreated sea in Sons of the Sea | Hijos de la Mar.
