@nationalscienceweek – Year 11 Chemistry students are conducting experiments with eager future scientists from our Primary school. Experiment 1: Decomposition of Hydrogen peroxide using the catalyst potassium iodide to make oxygen gas and water. Bubbles are there to trap the gas in a fun way. Experiment 2: Decomposition of sugar into Carbon using sulfuric acid. Experiment 3: Flame tests of various metal ions using ethanol to burn them – different metal atoms will have a characteristic colour when heated as their electrons gain energy and release it as light.
