Without explanation, the villagers of historic Kampung Hakka in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan were told to evict their houses. Grandma Kong is one of the remaining villagers still living in the area. The kampung, now nearly deserted, remains dear to her heart where six generations have lived in her lifetime.

As the threat of demolition looms to make way for new meaningless modern residency, old and fond memories as well as history that were made in the kampung, too, face the prospect of being erased.

Watch Grandma Kong relive her memories in ‘Memories of Resistance: Grandma Kong Defending Her Village,’ (2015) directed by Chan Seong Foong and Victor Chin, to have a glance of our ancestral roots that keep us grounded.
