https://www.buymeacoffee.com/mintvolcanotw – Island of Greed 黑金 (1997) is a Hong Kong funded political action thriller that was filmed in Taiwan. Directed by Michael Mak and starring Andy Lau, Island of Greed contains many elements of popular Hong Kong cinema: gangs, violence, sex, romance, and more! but it has an underlying message of how politics and gang culture are intertwined. We picked this film in light of China’s recent takeover of Hong Kong, now that freedom of expression is no longer possible in Hong Kong, a movie such as “Island of Greed”, for one thing collaboration with Taiwan would not be tolerated and of course the movie would not be allowed to be made about China, any film that is critical of their government is not possible to make. Although Island of Greed is in many ways a brainless action film, it is still trying to say something about society which is what all art and films should try to do.
The video features clips from the film Island of Greed 黑金 (1997) China Star Entertainment Group for educational and demonstrative purposes (fair use).
