Synopsis: “Ireland’s Green Goals” is a short advocacy film aimed at the Irish public calling for climate action. As writer and director of this debut piece, I felt that it should target the public but not blame them. Climate action works best with political intervention and the introduction of new legislation for waste management and environmental considerations. I was triggered to create this video when I learned of Ireland’s failure to meet the European Union’s 2020 targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increased allocation of GDP to research & development. In order to catch the public’s attention, I made sure to remind them that the government is paying out a fine of 600 million euro for their failure to meet these goals and the penalty for not meeting them in 2030 could be far greater. The video is more relevant than ever now that the government are stubbornly permitting the exploration of fossil fuels and raising carbon taxes as a solution – making the public pay for their past and present mistakes.
Initially pitched as a sketching video using Chinese artist Yu Lu for my Masters degree in Film Production & Direction, the film gradually came to life as an animation through the talented work of Joseph Kelly and Richard Heraghty.
