A City of Sadness directed by Hou Hsiao Hsien is a Taiwanese new wave film set in Jiufen, Taiwan, during the period of White Terror. While in someways A City of Sadness is a political film it is actually more about the characters and how they are effected by the changing tides of history. We discuss how Hou Hsiao Hsiens unique framing and style service the themes of the story and how as a filmmaker he makes scarifies in service of a unified aesthetic in his films. A City of Sadness might not be the first Taiwanese New Wave film you should watch but it is a excellent example of what this film movement is all about.
