Dark Water, a visceral fifteen-minute film by Erin Coates and Anna Nazzari, draws on the cinematic language of body horror and science fiction to reveal a woman grappling with grief at the loss of her mother and the discovery of a lost twin. The secret twin haunts the protagonist as she continues to discover alien body parts and hair inside herself, as if her lost twin has been absorbed into her body. The horror here is not externalised, but is manifested within – from inside the protagonist’s own body and from inside her house, a place that is meant to offer sanctuary. Ultimately, there is no escape or salvation, and she becomes absorbed and ‘digested’ by the house, by her past, and by the ocean. Coates and Nazzari write, ‘the monster reflected in our work is a monster of human origins; it grows inside us as an unrecognisable part of ourselves. It is the monster within, the monster that lurks in the id. Aren’t the most terrifying monsters those lingering in the uncanny valley, human but not human?’
